End grain of wood has high absorption rate and thus weaken the adhesive effect. The way to solve the problem is to apply a thin layer of glue to end grain first and wait for dry or about dry then apply another coat of glue and glue as normal. The reason is the first layer of glue reduce the absorbtion rate of end grain of wood.
